Japanese Akari Series Floor Lamp

In 1951, the American-Japanese artist Isamu Noguchi created the Akari light sculptures, including the iconic Akari Floor Lamp. He named these creations "Akari," a Japanese word meaning "light," symbolizing both illumination and lightness. Noguchi's inspiration came from a visit to the Japanese fishing village of Gifu, where he observed fishermen using traditional lanterns with bamboo ribs wrapped in delicate paper to attract fish. These lanterns, used in conjunction with trained cormorants for fishing, left a lasting impression on him.

Noguchi adapted the traditional lantern design to create his own light sculptures from wood and paper. He chose paper made from the mulberry tree for the Akari Floor Lamp because it diffuses and softens light evenly. The result is a series of lamps that are not only functional but also serve as beautiful works of art.
